Silk Scarf Painting Workshop with Tara Riley

Do you enjoy the feel and elegant drape of a silk scarf? Love the look of expressive watercolor in vibrant color? Come learn to make a hand painted silk scarf in my home-based studio. About the Instructor: Tara Riley holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After a career designing fashion accessories and theatrical costumes, Tara prioritized raising a family and worked part-time at her art. She received a MA in Art Education with a K-12 Art teaching certificate in 2010.Tara briefly taught art in public schools. Her family grown; she took the leap of faith to working exclusively as an artist in fall of 2022. Today, her scarves are in private collections throughout North America and Europe. What to Expect:

·      Fabric prep and stretching

·      Overview of dyes, chemicals. and resources

·      Gutta resist application

·      Direct dye application techniques: wet-on- dry, wet in wet, salt, alcohol, and glazing.

·      How to set dyes with steam for color permanence.

·      You will finish painting your scarf but it will not be ready not take home that day. Your painted scarf will need to dry, and cure for 24-48 hours before it is steamed for 2-3 hours in a steamer (by Tara). Then rinsed, washed, rinsed and steam ironed (by Tara).

·      We will arrange a time for you to pick up your steamed, washed & finished scarf later.

We provide: space, materials, equipment

·      One white 14” x 52” silk crepe de chine scarf; hemmed pre-washed, and ready to paint.

·      Professional quality French silk dyes and chemical water

·      Foam brushes, eyedroppers, paper towels, gloves

·      Water based gutta resist and applicators.

·      Palettes and containers for mixing dye.

·      Large tables for the stretched scarfs, stools, spotlights.

·      We will work in the garage attached to my home. Wear comfortable shoes and dress in layers. You will probably want to stand while painting.

 

 

Optional Materials for you to bring:

·      Apron

·      Watercolor brushes.

·      Blow dryer to speed up drying time.

·      Plant sprayer /Spritzer water bottle

·      Snack, beverage of choice.

If YOU must cancel: Refunds are not available unless we can rebook your place. Please note that the closer we get to the event, the less likely we will be able to find someone to replace you.

If YOU cancel, but we can refill your spot: You will be refunded everything you have paid minus a $20 administrative fee.

If WE have to cancel: We will refund everything you have paid.
